The correct hose size, working pressure, fluid, temperature, and fitting combination should be verified for every application.

Fitting Compatibility and Assembly

Selecting the right hose is only part of building a reliable hydraulic assembly. Proper fitting selection and assembly procedures are equally important.

Parker's 518D can be coupled with its 56 Series hose fittings. Certain sizes are also approved for 51R Series field-attachable and rapid-assembly connections. Compatibility depends on the specific hose size and fitting configuration.

The hose can be assembled using compatible Parker crimping equipment and the appropriate crimp specifications. Before assembly, consult Parker's current documentation to confirm the approved fitting, die, crimp setting, and assembly procedure.

Following the manufacturer's recommendations helps ensure the finished assembly is appropriate for the intended operating conditions.

Find the Right Hydraulic Hose for Your Application

When hydraulic equipment operates near electrical hazards, hose selection requires careful consideration of both hydraulic performance and electrical safety requirements. Parker's 518D provides a purpose-designed non-conductive option for aerial equipment and other applications where conductive hose is unsuitable.

Choosing the right pneumatic cylinder is about more than finding one that fits. It needs to provide enough force to move the load, meet the required cycle time, and fit the available space without sacrificing performance.

An oversized cylinder can increase compressed air consumption and equipment costs without improving performance.
How Much Force Does Your Cylinder Need?

Cylinder force depends on piston area and operating pressure. For a typical single-rod cylinder's extension stroke, use this formula to calculate theoretical force:

Force = Pressure × Piston Area

Piston area is calculated using the bore diameter. For pressure in psi and bore diameter in inches, the resulting force is measured in pounds-force (lbf).

Example: A cylinder with a 2-inch bore operating at 80 psi produces approximately 251 lbf of theoretical extension force.

Actual usable force will be lower due to friction and other losses. Retraction force is also lower because the piston rod reduces the effective piston area.

The cylinder should provide sufficient force for the application without adding unnecessary capacity. Account for the load, friction, and expected operating conditions when determining the required force.

Which SICK Safety Laser Scanner Is Right for Your Application?

When it comes to machine safety, choosing the right safety laser scanner is about more than simply finding a sensor that detects a person. The scanner needs to work with your control system, provide the coverage your application requires, and offer enough flexibility to accommodate the way your machine or process operates.

With several configurations available, it can be difficult to know where to start. That’s why SICK offers different versions of its nanoScan3 and microScan3 safety laser scanners. The right choice comes down to a few key questions: How does the scanner need to integrate with your control system? How many monitoring cases does your application require? And what protective field range do you need?

Use those three considerations to narrow down the right scanner for your application.

Step 1: How Does the Scanner Need to Integrate?

The first step is determining how the safety laser scanner will communicate with the rest of your machine or safety system.

The nanoScan3 and microScan3 can be configured for several integration options, including:

I/O

EtherNet/IP™ CIP Safety™ or EFI-pro

PROFINET PROFIsafe or EtherCAT FSoE

Your existing control architecture can help determine which scanner configuration makes the most sense.

For applications using standard I/O, the decision process moves to the number of monitoring cases required. For applications using a safety network, the scanner’s network compatibility becomes an important part of the selection.

SICK offers network-integrated versions of the microScan3 that support protocols such as PROFINET PROFIsafe and EtherNet/IP CIP Safety, allowing safety-related communication to be integrated into the machine’s control architecture.

Step 2: How Many Monitoring Cases Do You Need?

Once you've determined how the scanner will integrate with your system, consider how many monitoring cases your application requires.

Monitoring cases allow the scanner to use different configurations for different operating conditions. For applications with simpler requirements, a Core model may provide the functionality needed. If your application requires multiple configurations or greater flexibility, a Pro model can accommodate up to 128 configurable fields and monitoring cases.

This gives you the first major distinction between the product options:

Core: Up to 2 monitoring cases

Pro: Up to 128 monitoring cases

But there's one more important factor to consider before selecting a scanner: how far does your protective field need to extend?

Step 3: How Much Protective Field Range Do You Need?

Now consider the size of the area you need to protect. This is where the choice between the nanoScan3 and microScan3 becomes straightforward:

Need a protective field up to 3 meters?
Look to the nanoScan3 family.

Need a protective field greater than 3 meters?
The microScan3 family provides the extended range needed, with a protective field of up to 9 meters.

From there, your monitoring-case requirements help determine whether the Core or Pro version is the better fit.

Putting the Pieces Together

With your integration, monitoring-case requirements, and protective field range identified, you can narrow your selection to one of four primary options:

Application Needs

nanoScan3 Core: Compact and Straightforward

Choose the nanoScan3 Core when your application needs a compact safety laser scanner with a protective field range of up to 3 meters and a more straightforward monitoring configuration. Its small form factor can be especially beneficial when installation space is limited.

nanoScan3 Pro: Compact With More Flexibility

The nanoScan3 Pro is a good fit when you still need the compact size and 3-meter protective field range of the nanoScan3, but your application requires more monitoring cases and configurable fields. With up to 128 monitoring cases, the Pro version provides significantly more flexibility for changing machine or vehicle conditions.

microScan3 Core: More Coverage

When your application requires a protective field beyond 3 meters, the microScan3 Core provides the additional coverage needed, with a protective field range of up to 9 meters. It is designed for applications where extended protection is more important than having the extensive monitoring flexibility of the Pro version.

microScan3 Pro: Maximum Flexibility

For applications that need both extended range and a high degree of configurability, the microScan3 Pro offers up to 9 meters of protective field range and up to 128 monitoring cases.

Its ability to support multiple protective fields and detailed configuration makes it a strong option for more complex applications, including robotics and mobile applications where operating conditions can change.

Choosing the Right Safety Laser Scanner Doesn't Have to Be Complicated

There isn't one safety laser scanner that is right for every application. The best choice depends on how the scanner needs to integrate, how many monitoring cases your application requires, and how much area needs to be protected.

Starting with those three questions can help narrow the options quickly:

1. How does it need to integrate?
I/O, EtherNet/IP CIP Safety or EFI-pro, PROFINET PROFIsafe, or EtherCAT FSoE?

2. How many monitoring cases are required?
A smaller number of cases or the flexibility of up to 128?

3. How much protective field range do you need?
Up to 3 meters or more than 3 meters?

Once those requirements are clear, the choice between the nanoScan3 Core, nanoScan3 Pro, microScan3 Core, and microScan3 Pro becomes much easier.

Still unsure which configuration fits your application? Triad Technologies can help you evaluate your safety requirements and find the SICK safety laser scanner that fits your system.

Hydraulic tools are built to handle demanding applications but getting those tools to the jobsite and keeping them protected, organized, and ready to use, can present challenges. Traditional toolboxes and storage cases often function as standalone units, making it difficult to build a storage setup around the specific tools needed for a job.

Enerpac Armor Stack™ Modular Storage Cases take a different approach. Designed as a modular storage platform built around Enerpac tools, Armor Stack combines heavy-duty protection with stackable, interlocking cases that can be configured for specific applications. The result is a storage and transport system designed to help keep hydraulic tools organized, protected, and ready for deployment in demanding industrial environments.

Built Around a Modular Storage System

The Armor Stack system is designed to do more than hold tools. Multiple cases can stack and lock together as a single integrated system, allowing users to build configurations around the tools and equipment required for a particular job. This modular design can help simplify tool deployment while reducing the number of individual cases that need to be transported to the work area.

Designed for Demanding Industrial Environments

Industrial tools can encounter rough handling, vibration, changing temperatures, dust, water, and other challenging conditions during transportation and use. Armor Stack cases are designed with these conditions in mind. The system has been validated against MIL-STD-810H, ATA300, DEF-STAN, and IP67 performance requirements, addressing conditions including impact, vibration, water intrusion, dust exposure, temperature changes, and transport durability. That protection is built into several aspects of the case design.

IP67 Protection

IP67-rated sealing helps protect the contents from dust ingress and water immersion, providing protection when cases are exposed to demanding environments.

ATA300-Compliant Breather Port

The integrated breather port equalizes internal and external air pressure, helping prevent vacuum locks during transportation and supporting acceptance for airline transport.

Metal-to-Metal Latching

Armor Stack cases use a metal-to-metal latching system to provide secure, stable stacking. The interlocking design helps keep cases together during transportation and deployment.

Secure Tool Storage

Selected kits feature pre-cut foam interiors matched to Enerpac tools. The foam helps hold tools securely in place and minimizes movement during transit.

Designed for Easier Transport

Protection is only part of the equation. Industrial tools also need to get from storage to the work area efficiently. Armor Stack cases include features designed to simplify handling and transportation. Large ergonomic overmold handles provide a more comfortable grip, while the optional ARMRT2 Mobility Transport Kit adds wheels to improve maneuverability across smooth surfaces.

Additional features help secure cases during transport, including:

Padlockable locations for added security

Ratchet strap locators to help position straps

Zip-tie holes near the front latches

An accessory socket for the compact wheel attachment and future accessories

Together, these features give users multiple ways to move, secure, and organize their equipment based on the application.

Storage That Can Be Configured Around the Job

One of the key advantages of the Armor Stack platform is its ability to accommodate different tool configurations.

The ARMRC8 is available as an empty modular case for users who want to store their existing tools. Divider-ready slots provide flexibility for separating tools and equipment when foam isn't being used, including non-Enerpac tools.

For users looking for a ready-to-deploy solution, Enerpac also offers preconfigured Armor Stack kits built around specific hydraulic applications.

“We are pleased to welcome the FCA team to the Triad family,” stated Greg Wissman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Triad. “Filtration is an area we have been deliberate about expanding, and FCA gives us both the product breadth and the technical depth to do it well. FCA has spent nearly five decades earning the trust of the aviation fueling community, and pairing that reputation with Triad’s distribution platform allows us to deliver a wider range of filtration and fluid handling solutions than either company could provide on its own. We are incredibly excited to add multiple Parker Hannifin-owned brands to our existing portfolio of products, most notably Velcon and Meggitt. Further, I expect Triad to continue to expand its filtration business in the coming years through additional investments and acquisitions.”

Gordon Tompkinson and Brian Tompkinson, co-owners of FCA, added, “Our father founded this business in 1976, and since then our customers have counted on us to know their operations, keep the right parts on the shelf, and get them what they need when they need it. Joining Triad gives those customers access to a significantly broader set of products and technical resources while keeping the same level of service they have relied on for many years.”

“FCA meaningfully enhances Triad’s filtration offering and establishes an attractive position in aviation and the fuel filtration markets,” stated Charlie Denison, Managing Director at Shorehill Capital. “We are thrilled to welcome FCA and the Tompkinsons into the Triad family.” Triad and Shorehill Capital partnered in October 2019. Since that time, Triad has substantially expanded its product breadth to include seals, O-rings, and filtration solutions.

Pressure, temperature, chemical exposure, friction, wear, and movement can all affect how a seal performs in an application.

PTFE is a popular material for demanding sealing applications because of its low friction, chemical resistance, and broad temperature capabilities. However, not all PTFE seals are made from the same compound. Different fillers can be added to PTFE to improve specific performance characteristics. Virgin PTFE, glass-filled PTFE, carbon-filled PTFE, and bronze-filled PTFE each offer different advantages depending on the application.

Spring Energized Seals, are a popular choice for many seal scenarios and understanding these material differences can help you create a seal designed to perform under the conditions your application demands.

What Is a Spring Energized Seal?

A Spring Energized Seal combines a PTFE sealing element with a metal spring or energizer. The spring applies continuous force to the sealing lip, helping maintain contact with the mating surface as operating conditions change.

The PTFE jacket provides the primary sealing properties, while the spring helps maintain sealing force. This combination makes Spring Energized Seals well suited for applications where chemical resistance, low friction, temperature performance, or challenging operating conditions are important. Because the PTFE jacket is such an important part of the seal, selecting the right PTFE blend is a key consideration.

What Is a PTFE Blend?

PTFE, or polytetrafluoroethylene, is a thermoplastic material commonly used in sealing applications where chemical resistance, low friction, and temperature performance are important. Virgin PTFE provides many of these properties naturally. However, unfilled PTFE can have limitations in applications involving high loads, deformation, or significant wear.

To address these limitations, manufacturers add fillers to the PTFE material. These fillers can change the mechanical, thermal, and wear characteristics, allowing the material to better match specific operating conditions. The right blend ultimately depends on what the Spring Energized Seal needs to withstand.

Explore Your PTFE Compound Options

There is no single PTFE blend that is best for every application. Each material offers different performance characteristics based on factors such as load, movement, wear, chemical exposure, and dimensional stability.

Select a material below to learn more about its characteristics and when it may be the right choice for your application.

How Do You Choose the Right PTFE Blend?

Selecting a PTFE blend starts with understanding the conditions the seal will encounter during operation. The material that works well in one application may not be the best choice for another.

Pressure: How much pressure will the seal experience?

Higher-pressure applications may require a blend with improved resistance to deformation and extrusion. Filled PTFE materials can provide greater mechanical stability than virgin PTFE in demanding conditions.

Temperature: What temperatures will the seal experience?

Both the operating temperature and potential temperature spikes should be considered. The selected blend must maintain its performance throughout the application's temperature range.

Chemical Compatibility: What media will the seal contact?

PTFE is known for its excellent chemical resistance, but the addition of fillers can affect the overall chemical compatibility of the blend. The process media should be evaluated before selecting a filled PTFE material.

Movement: Is the seal static, reciprocating, or rotating?

A seal exposed to continuous or repeated movement may require greater wear resistance than a primarily static application. Dynamic applications can benefit from PTFE blends designed to improve wear and friction performance.

Friction and Wear: How much friction will the application generate?

Applications involving continuous movement can place additional demands on the sealing material. Selecting a blend with appropriate wear and friction characteristics can help improve seal life and overall equipment performance.

Mating Surface: What material and surface finish will the seal run against?

The sealing material and mating surface work together. Certain fillers may be more abrasive against softer materials, making surface compatibility an important part of the selection process. Controlling the surface finish is generally required for optimal seal performance.

The Right PTFE Blend Starts With the Application

Choosing a PTFE blend isn't simply about selecting the strongest or most wear-resistant material. The best compound is the one that matches the conditions of the application.

Virgin PTFE may be the right choice when chemical resistance and low friction are the priority. Glass-filled PTFE can provide improved dimensional stability and mechanical performance. Carbon-filled PTFE can offer advantages in demanding dynamic applications, while bronze-filled PTFE can provide increased strength and load-bearing capability. With multiple factors influencing seal performance and hundreds of filler materials and combinations available, material selection can become complicated quickly.

That's where working with a sealing specialist can make a difference.

5 Ways Your Plant Could Be Wasting Compressed Air

Compressed air is one of the most useful utilities in a manufacturing facility and one of the most expensive.

The challenge is that compressed-air waste is not always obvious. A plant can lose efficiency through small leaks, excessive pressure, inefficient blow-off applications, improperly sized components, and pressure drops throughout the distribution system.

The good news? Improving compressed-air efficiency does not always require a complete system overhaul. Often, it starts by identifying where air is being used unnecessarily.

Here are five common areas to look at.

1. Running More Pressure Than the Application Needs

More pressure is not always better. Many facilities maintain a high system pressure because one machine or process requires it. The result is that other pneumatic devices may be operating at a higher pressure than necessary.

That can lead to increased air consumption, additional component wear, and more leakage throughout the system. That extra pressure comes at a cost.

A better approach is to determine the pressure actually required at the point of use and regulate individual applications accordingly.

Parker air-preparation products, including the Global FRL family of filters, regulators, filter/regulators, and related components, can help control pressure locally while maintaining consistent air preparation at the machine.

Instead of asking how much pressure is available, ask: How much pressure does the application actually need?

Regulating pressure at the point of use can help ensure each application receives the pressure required for reliable performance, without using more compressed air than necessary.

2. Ignoring Compressed-Air Leaks

Leaks are one of the most common sources of wasted compressed air.

A small leak from a fitting, tube connection, hose, valve, or cylinder seal may not seem significant by itself. Multiply that leak across dozens or hundreds of components operating around the clock, and the cost can become substantial.

Common leak points include:

Push-to-connect fittings

Damaged tubing

Hose assemblies

Valve and cylinder seals

Threaded connections

Regulators

Quick disconnects

Leaks also force the compressor system to work harder to maintain plant pressure. Regular leak detection and maintenance can help identify these issues before they become a larger source of wasted energy. Using reliable fittings, tubing, valves, and pneumatic components can also help reduce potential leak points throughout the system.

When leaking connections or aging tubing are identified, Parker Prestolok push-to-connect fittings and pneumatic tubing provide options for repairing or upgrading those connection points. The important thing is not simply replacing a leaking fitting with another fitting. The entire connection should be evaluated, including tubing condition, tube preparation, thread condition, routing, and component wear.

3. Using Continuous Air for Blow-Off Applications

Blow-off applications are everywhere in manufacturing.

Compressed air may be used to:

Clear chips or scrap

Clean parts

Dry surfaces

Move lightweight material

Cool components

Clear tooling

Remove debris from stamping dies

The issue is that many of these applications use continuous open airflow even though the process may only need a short burst of air. If an open nozzle blows for several seconds during every machine cycle, compressed-air consumption can add up quickly.

One way to address this is to convert continuous airflow into pulsed air. The Parker Air Saver Unit is designed specifically for this type of application. The Air Saver converts a continuous air blow into a series of ON/OFF pulses. During the OFF portion of the cycle, compressed air is not being consumed.

Parker states that the technology can reduce air consumption by up to 50% in appropriate blow-off applications.

What Could This Be Worth?

Parker’s Air Saver literature includes a sample application based on:

4 nozzles

6 mm nozzle diameter

$0.10/kWh

1 minute of blow time per 4-minute cycle

3 shifts

5 days per week

In that example, the estimated reduced annual air-generating cost for all four nozzles is $3,568.13 per year.

The same example also estimates a reduction of approximately 23.07 tons of CO2 emissions annually. That is a useful illustration of how a relatively simple blow-off application can quietly become a meaningful operating cost when compressed air is allowed to run continuously.

Actual savings will vary based on nozzle size, operating hours, electrical cost, system pressure, compressor efficiency, and application duty cycle. The important part is evaluating the process first. Reducing air consumption only makes sense if the application still performs properly.

The goal is not simply to use less air. The goal is to use only the amount of air necessary to do the work.

4. Oversizing Pneumatic Components

When it comes to pneumatics, bigger is not always better. Oversized cylinders, valves, and tubing can increase air consumption without improving machine performance. For example, cylinder sizing should be based on the actual force required for the application:

Force = Pressure × Piston Area

A larger cylinder requires more air volume every time it cycles. If that additional force is not needed, the system may simply be using more compressed air than necessary.

Proper component sizing should consider factors such as:

Required force

Stroke length

Speed

Cycle rate

Available pressure

Load conditions

Tubing length

Valve flow capacity

Parker offers a broad range of pneumatic cylinders and actuators that can be selected around the actual requirements of the application, including 4MA, SR, LP, guided cylinders, and rodless actuator technologies.

Properly sizing the actuator, and then matching the valve, tubing, and flow requirements to it, can help avoid unnecessary compressed-air consumption while still providing the force, speed, and performance the machine requires.

This is also where working through the application with Triad can add value. Rather than simply replacing an existing component with the same size, we can look at the force, flow, pressure, speed, and cycle requirements to determine whether the existing pneumatic system is properly sized.

5. Losing Pressure Through Your Distribution System

Sometimes the issue is not the compressor, it is the path the air takes to reach the machine. Undersized piping, long runs, excessive fittings, contamination, and aging infrastructure can all contribute to pressure loss.

When pressure drops at the point of use, the common response is to increase compressor pressure. While that may address the immediate issue, it can also increase energy consumption across the entire facility. A properly designed compressed-air distribution system helps deliver the required flow and pressure to the machine with minimal pressure drop. Solutions like Parker Transair aluminum compressed-air piping can provide a flexible, corrosion-resistant option for compressed-air distribution while making it easier to modify the system as production needs change.

Start with the Application

Improving compressed-air efficiency does not necessarily mean replacing your entire pneumatic system.

Start by asking a few simple questions:

What pressure does the application actually require?

Are leaks contributing to unnecessary air loss?

Can continuous blow-off be replaced with pulsed airflow?

Are cylinders, valves, and tubing properly sized?

Is the distribution system creating unnecessary pressure drop?

The answers can help identify opportunities to reduce compressed-air consumption while maintaining, or even improving, machine performance.

Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

Compressed air is a valuable utility, and every unnecessary PSI, leak, or oversized component can contribute to higher operating costs. By optimizing pressure, addressing leaks, improving blow-off applications, properly sizing components, and reducing pressure loss, manufacturers can take meaningful steps toward a more efficient pneumatic system.

Triad Technologies works with Parker pneumatic technologies including cylinders, valves, air preparation, fittings, tubing, compressed-air piping, Air Saver products, and other air-management technologies. Whether you are troubleshooting a pressure issue, looking to reduce air consumption, or evaluating a new pneumatic application, our team can help identify the right solution.

5 Tips for Safe Hose Assemblies

September is Hose Safety Awareness Month, an initiative from NAHAD dedicated to promoting safer practices throughout the hose industry.

From selecting the right components to inspecting assemblies already in service, hose safety requires attention throughout the entire lifecycle of an assembly. A small oversight, such as improper routing, incorrect component selection, or missed signs of wear, can lead to downtime, equipment damage, and potential safety risks.

In recognition of Hose Safety Awareness Month, here are five ways to help improve hose assembly safety.

1. Start With the Application
The STAMPED method is a framework promoted by NAHAD to help identify the requirements of a hose application. STAMPED stands for size, temperature, application, material, pressure, ends, and delivery and helps determine the correct hose and fittings for your application. Before selecting a hose and fittings, consider the operating conditions:

S – Size: Inside diameter (ID) and length

T – Temperature: Media temperature

A – Application: Working conditions and external exposure

M – Media: Fluid or gas type, and concentration

P – Pressure: Maximum working pressure

E - Ends: Fitting style, type, orientation, and attachment

D -Delivery: Testing, quality, packaging, and shipping needs

The goal is simple: understand how the assembly will be used before determining what components should be used.

Ask the right questions before the assembly reaches the crimper.

2. Proper Components Still Require Proper Assembly
Selecting the right hose and fittings is only part of the equation. The fabrication process must also follow manufacturer specifications and established procedures. Even quality components can become a safety concern when assembled incorrectly.

Key assembly considerations include:

Compatibility
Use hose and fittings designed to work together.
Specifications
Follow manufacturer-recommended crimp dimensions and assembly procedures.
Equipment
Keep fabrication equipment properly maintained and calibrated.
Training
Make sure personnel understand the procedures and requirements involved in building an assembly.

3. Don't Let Installation Create a Problem
A hose can be properly selected and assembled and still fail prematurely because of how it is installed. Poor routing can create unnecessary stress through excessive bending, twisting, stretching, or abrasion.

During installation, watch for:

Sharp edges and abrasive surfaces

Excessive bending

Twisting

Insufficient room for equipment movement

Exposure to excessive heat

Routing that exceeds the hose's recommended bend radius

Think beyond the connection points and consider how the entire hose assembly moves and interacts with the surrounding equipment. A properly installed hose should have the room to work, not fight against its environment.

4. Make Inspection Part of the Routine
Hoses rarely choose a convenient time to fail. Regular inspections can help identify potential issues before they turn into unexpected downtime or a more serious safety concern.

Look for visible warning signs such as:

Abrasion or worn cover

Cuts or cracks

Kinking

Stretching

Pinholes or leaks

Damaged fittings

Corrosion

Signs of twisting or excessive stress

But don't stop at the hose itself. Inspect the entire assembly, including fittings, connections, routing, and the surrounding environment.

5. Treat Hose Safety as an Ongoing Process
Hose safety isn't something to consider only when an assembly is fabricated or after a problem occurs. It requires consistent attention throughout the life of the equipment.

A stronger hose safety program may include:

Ongoing employee training

Consistent assembly procedures

Routine inspections

Documented maintenance practices

Regular conversations about safety
